2008 Tribal Consultation : April 15, 2008 Dear Tribal Leader: Section 903 of Title IX of the Violence Against Women Act of 2005 requires the United States Attorney General and the Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services to hold an annual consultation with Indian tribal governments on the subject of violence against American Indian and Alaska Native women. The purpose of the consultation is to solicit recommendations from tribal government leaders on the following three topics: * Administering grant funds appropriated for tribal governments and programs created to benefit tribal governments by the original Violence Against Women Act and subsequent legislation; * Enhancing the safety of Indian women from domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking; and * Strengthening the Federal response to crimes of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Obviously, some politician must have a lot to gain in order to pull this one off! It would be one thing to ask for the land to build a hospital or senior living facility, but a racetrack?!?! Come on!! People complain about gas prices now, and your citizen's are going to go for a racetrack?? Why don't we just build a bank or a 7-Eleven in the middle of Arlington National Cemetery! Unless you have knowledge of who is buried in these graves, you can't know for sure that there are not veterans of some sort interred there! If it were your family, you'd be pitching a fit too!! This is one area that majority rule is complete and utter B.S.!! Cemeteries are sacred grounds. It is against Federal law to disturb Native American burial grounds, so what makes this any different?? It also prohibits scrap dealers from purchasing metal that can be identified as belonging to local governments without specific authorization including traffic signal boxes, street signs, manhole covers, guardrails and bleacher seats removed from local parks. Scrap dealers are also prohibited from buying metal beer kegs unless a brewer sells them."
